Activities of Daily Living—commonly referred to as ADLs—are the essential, everyday tasks people must be able to perform to care for themselves safely and comfortably. These activities form the foundation of independent living. As individuals age or experience health challenges, one or more ADLs may become harder to manage. The level of difficulty varies from person to person and often changes over time.
Healthcare professionals and caregivers commonly use ADLs to help assess whether someone can continue living independently or may benefit from in-home support.
The Six Core Activities of Daily Living
There are six widely recognized ADLs used to evaluate daily functioning:
- Bathing: The ability to bathe independently or with limited assistance, such as help washing a specific body area.
- Dressing: Selecting appropriate clothing and putting it on, including fastening buttons or zippers. Minimal assistance, such as tying shoes, may be acceptable.
- Toileting: Using the restroom independently, including getting on and off the toilet, managing clothing, and personal hygiene.
- Transferring: Moving safely in and out of a bed, chair, or wheelchair, with or without the use of assistive devices.
- Continence: Maintaining control over bladder and bowel functions.
- Feeding: Eating independently by bringing food from plate to mouth. Meal preparation may be done by someone else.
In-Home Care Support for ADLs
In-home care plays a vital role in helping older adults maintain dignity, safety, and independence. Whether someone lives alone, with family, or in a senior living community, professional caregivers can provide reliable assistance with ADLs while encouraging as much independence as possible.
At Live-In Care of PA, caregivers are committed to supporting daily routines in a respectful, compassionate way—allowing clients to remain in the comfort of home while receiving the help they need. Care plans are personalized to fit each individual’s abilities, preferences, and lifestyle.
